Maroon Bells, Aspen
Aspen trees in the Autumn near Aspen
Aspen, situated in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is a playground for the rich and famous but also a beautiful destination for ordinary folk in the summer months. Accommodation in Aspen itself is fairly pricey, but within a few miles less expensive accommodation can be found. In the summer months it is worthwhile to rent a car and tour the area. A must is to visit the Maroon Bells/Snowmass areas where in the Autumn/Fall the Aspen trees are at their best. I must admit that I have only visited during late summer and not as yet the winter months which even if not partaking in winter sports must be stunning to view.
Feeling adventurous, then try the Independence Pass which is part of Highway 82 and passes over the Continental Divide between Leadville and Aspen. It’s the highest paved pass in North America and is a classic Colorado drive. The summit of the Continental Divide is 12,095 ft asl., so make sure you check weather conditions before you take the drive. As you would expect the pass is frequently closed during the long winter but if you’re visiting during the summer, it’s a must do trip!
